Gay Bible angers Christians

A gay version of the Bible, in which God says it is better to be gay than straight, is to be published by an American film producer.

New Mexico-based Revision Studios will publish The Princess Diana Bible – so named because of Diana's "many good works", it says – online at princessdianabible.com in spring 2009. A preview of Genesis is already available, in which instead of creating Adam and Eve, God creates Aida and Eve.

"And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Aida, and she slept: and he took one of her ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; and the rib, which the Lord God had taken from woman, made he another woman, and brought her unto the first. And Aida said, 'This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of me. Therefore shall a woman leave her mother, and shall cleave unto her wife: and they shall be one flesh.' And they were both naked, the woman and her wife, and were not ashamed."

The film studio said it would also adapt and direct the revised Bible as a two-part mini-series, The Gay Old Testament and The Gay New Testament, once it is completed.(read more)

N.M. baby dies from illness tied to formula

Second infant is hospitalized with same rare infection
SANTA FE, N.M. - The New Mexico Health Department says a baby has died and another has been hospitalized due to a rare infection.

Both babies had been fed powdered formula and other foods. They had different strains of the bacteria Enterobacter sakazakii (Ehn Teroh' bac ter Sah kah zah' kee).

The worrisome germ can cause meningitis, bloodstream infections or a deadly intestinal inflammation in newborns, especially premature infants or others with weakened immune systems.
Infant infections with the germ have been associated with contaminated powdered formula products, but other environmental sources of contamination are possible, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said.

With sports fans still getting used to their high-definition television sets, the National Football League is already thinking ahead to the next potential upgrade: 3-D.

Next week, a game between the San Diego Chargers and the Oakland Raiders will be broadcast live in 3-D to theaters in Los Angeles, New York and Boston. It is a preliminary step on what is likely a long road to any regular 3-D broadcasts of football games.

The idea is a "proof of concept," says Howard Katz, NFL senior vice president of broadcasting and media operations. "We want to demonstrate this and let people get excited about it and see what the future holds."(read more)

Five-figure bonuses stun Chicago plant workers
Owners of ball bearings company reward workers for years of service

CHICAGO - Dave Tiderman wondered if the decimal point was in the wrong place when he opened his $35,000 company bonus. Jose Rojas saw his $10,000 check and thought, "That can't be right."

Valentin Dima watched co-workers breaking down in tears over their bonus checks and didn't trust his emotions. He drove home first, then opened his envelope: $33,000.

Year-end bonuses are rare these days. Rarer still is what the Spungen family, owners of a ball bearings company in Waukegan, Ill., about 40 miles north of Chicago, did as they sold the business.
They gave out whopping thank-you bonuses.

A total of $6.6 million is being shared by just 230 employees of Waukegan-based Peer Bearing Co., with facilities in England and the United States. Amounts varied and were based on years of service.

"They treated us like extended family," said Maria Dima, who works at Peer Bearing along with her husband, Valentin, and received a somewhat smaller check than he did. "We won the lottery."

With $100 million in sales last year, Peer recently was acquired by a Swedish company for an undisclosed amount. Danny Spungen, whose grandfather founded the company in 1941, said it was a unanimous family decision to thank employees with the bonuses.

Laurence and Florence Spungen and their four children decided on a bonus formula a year before the sale closed to SKF Group, "a gamble that we would come out OK as well," Danny Spungen said.

He and other family members signed, by hand, two thank-you cards to each employee, one in Spanish and one in English. Each card was printed with all the workers' names and the years they were hired. The text expressed gratitude for "the loyalty and hard work of our employees over the years."

The new owners intend to operate Peer as a wholly owned subsidiary. Workers have been told that most will keep their jobs, and life at the company hasn't changed much since the party in mid-September when the bonuses were distributed.

Incongruously, the bonuses coincided with the U.S. economic meltdown. While neighbors and friends faced new financial strains, the Peer employees could breathe easier.

"I know people who work for corporate America are not going to get treated like that. And most of the family owned businesses are not going to treat you like that," Tiderman said. "This is something that just really doesn't happen."

Venus and Jupiter to form triangle with moon

Celestial bodies reach closest point Monday

Venus and Jupiter, the two brightest planets, have been marching toward each other for more than a month in the southwestern sky at dusk. As they've drawn closer together, the sight has been catching more people's eyes, and now the show is reaching its climax.

This evening, weather permitting, you will see Venus and Jupiter blazing about a finger's width apart at arm's length. Look early enough and, far to their lower right, you can find the crescent moon just above the horizon.
Tomorrow evening, the two planets will be slightly closer together, and the moon will be hanging higher and nearer them.
Monday night brings the peak of the show. The two planets will remain as close as ever, and the moon will form a compact, extraordinary triangle with them.
Then on subsequent evenings, things fall apart. The moon will move farther off to the upper left, and Jupiter starts pulling away to Venus's right.
Although the three objects look close together, looks are deceiving. The moon is 252,000 miles away. Venus is currently 370 times farther than the moon, at 94 million miles. And Jupiter, at 540 million miles, is nearly six times as far away as Venus.
To put it another way: The moon is currently 1.4 light-seconds distant, Venus is 8.4 light-minutes distant, and Jupiter is 42 light-minutes away. That's how long the light from each has been traveling through space before it hits your eye.

Special Treat for Europeans

On December 1st, the apparent path of Venus behind the crescent Moon depends on your location in Europe.

Across much of Europe, even people who never normally look up should watch the western twilight on Monday evening, December 1st. The Moon will be right next to Venus and Jupiter. But the real show happens when the Moon's dim, earthlit edge occults (covers) dazzling Venus itself. The second act happens roughly an hour or more later, when Venus reemerges into view from behind the crescent's bright edge.

At locations where the twilight sky has darkened enough, all you'll need are your eyes. But binoculars or a telescope will give a much grander view — and will also allow you to watch the occultation where it happens in a bright sky, even before sunset. Actually, with Venus a full 43° from the Sun, you may be able to pick it up in daylight with your unaided eye, depending on the clearness of the air.

Venus will appear small and gibbous in a telescope, 69% sunlit and 17 arcseconds across (a hundredth the diameter of the Moon). Because of Venus's significant angular size, its disappearance and reappearance will each be gradual, taking 30 seconds or more.

Best-selling author and political commentator, Ann Coulter, has been silenced. Not by critics, but reportedly by a busted jaw.

The New York Post's Page Six reports that "although we didn't think it would be possible to silence Ann Coulter, the leggy reactionary broke her jaw and that the mouth that roared has been wired shut."

Rarely short of opinions to voice, Coulter has many fans on the political right and has earned the ire of leftists, whom she openly disdains. Here are some of Coulter's gems of wisdom, the likes of which we may have to live without in coming weeks.

These broads are millionaires, lionized on TV and in articles about them, reveling in their status as celebrities and stalked by grief-arazzis. These self-obsessed women seemed genuinely unaware that 9/11 was an attack on our nation and acted as if the terrorist attacks happened only to them. ... I've never seen people enjoying their husbands' deaths so much ... the Democrat ratpack gals endorsed John Kerry for president ... cutting campaign commercials... how do we know their husbands weren't planning to divorce these harpies? Now that their shelf life is dwindling, they'd better hurry up and appear in Playboy."

It's unclear how Coulter's jaw was broken.

Girl, 16, who throws knuckleball, drafted by Japanese pro team

TOKYO -- The knuckleball -- the fluttering, hard-to-hit pitch that's rare in the major leagues -- is propelling a 16-year-old girl to the pros in Japan.
Eri Yoshida was inspired to learn how to throw the knuckler after seeing a video of Boston Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield. On Monday, she broke the gender barrier by being drafted for an independent league team as Japan's first female professional baseball player.
"Hope I can see her pitch one day," Wakefield said in a message he texted to the Red Sox that was relayed to The Associated Press. "I'm honored that someone wants to become me. I wish her the best of luck. Maybe I can learn something from her."
Eri Yoshida wore her high school uniform at the news conference, but the next uniform she gets to put on will be that of a pro baseball player.
The high schooler was chosen by the Kobe 9 Cruise in the Japanese League, which starts its inaugural season in April.
The Cruise are a far cry from Tokyo's Yomiuri Giants. Making the squad is more like earning a tentative slot on a farm team than warming up in the bullpen for the Red Sox.
Even so, the 5-foot, 114-pound Yoshida has smashed the glass ceiling with her unorthodox, sidearm pitch in baseball-crazy Japan, where women normally are relegated to amateur, company-sponsored teams or to the sport of softball.(read more)

Driver May Have Texted Before Crash

BERNALILLO COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) - A fatal moped accident occurred Sunday night, and police believe that the driver was text messaging minutes before the crash.

Douglas Flores, 41, was killed when his moped crashed into a telephone pole. Flores' vehicle was seen driving off of the road before the crash at around 9:00 p.m. Sunday.

Witnesses also told deputies that he may have been trying to text message while driving the scooter.

The accident was outside the Albuquerque city limits where it's not illegal to text or talk on a cell phone while driving.

However, authorities said that cell phone usage while driving is dangerous.

"I'm not familiar with a lot of crashes in this regard, but obviously it's a very dangerous thing for anyone operating a motor vehicle to be doing," Bernalillo County Sheriff's Public Information Officer Erin Kinnard Thompson said.

Police advise to pay full attention to the road when driving.

"Keep both hands on the wheel, also keeping your full attention on the roadway, try to use hands-free type devices instead of trying to text when you're driving," Deputy Gilbert Garcia said. "Especially you're riding a motorcycle or a little scooter."

John Walsh of the Albuquerque Police Department said that in Albuquerque texting while driving illegal, even on a moped.

Drivers can also be cited for talking on a cell phone, putting on make-up or eating while operating a motor vehicle.

The sheriff's office said that the investigation may include looking at Flores' cell phone records at the time of the accident.
Right now, the sheriff's department has not been able to locate his cell phone at the scene of the crash.

Meteor lights up Canada's skies

Footage of a large meteor streaking across western Canada has been broadcast on Canadian television.

The video filmed from a local police car on patrol, showed a small light turning into a massive fireball as it fell from the sky and appeared to hit the Earth in the distance.

Scientists are now searching for the remains of the meteor.
